Prologue: Listen when people are talking, don't just cut them off

“Gin, what are you doing?” The blood red sunset had turned into the darkest of nights. It seemed that a shadow had covered up what was left of Shouka Sonjuku, embracing it in its suffocating arms. An eerie silence surrounded the ground, threatening to swallow up all that dared to speak.

“Can’t you tell?” Gintoki kept his back turned to you as he packed up his few belongings, carefully, as if he were handling glass.

“Where are you going?” You asked this time, hoping he would give you a straight answer.

Instead, he gave you another vague answer. “You know, right?”

Clenching your hands into fists, you asked him a third time, wishing you knew a way to stop him. “Gintoki, what about your promise with Sensei?  He trusted you to take care of our home!”

Hands stopping midmotion, Gintoki turned and glared at you. “There’s no point in protecting this place if he isn’t going to come back. And he isn’t going to come back unless we go and save him!”

    “We?”

    Gintoki sighed. “Yeah. Me, Zura,Takasugi-”

Horrible thoughts ran through your head. Memories of your parents, their heads placed out onto a long wooden table for all to look at. Amantos and their blood-stained words gleaming cruelly while you helplessly watched your parents’ body be ripped to pieces. Their gleeful laugh as they saw the damage they have caused people, caused you. No one being brave enough to stop them, no one stepping forward to help the poor woman as they tore her throat out with their claws, no one saving the little boy as he ran to his mother’s lifeless body, only to end up the same way a minute later.

“.......” You stared at Gintoki straight in his maroon eyes. “Gin, do you know what kind of place the battlefield is? Do you know what you’re dragging the three of yourselves into?”

    “Yeah-”

“You don’t! Gin, you don’t!” Covering your face with your hands, you tried to keep yourself from crying. “Gintoki…. You don’t… please don’t go…..please….. I-I don’t want to lose anyone anymore…please…..don’t leave me…..”

All you could see was Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi ending up the same way, and you, once again, powerless to save your best friends. Their spiritless eyes, unmoving bodies, and lifeless limbs plagued your thoughts. No, you couldn’t let them end up that way.

Throwing your arms around Gintoki’s neck and burying your face into his warm chest, you choked out, “I beg of you Gin…. please reconsider…”

Not a second later his arms were around you, pulling you closer to him. In a gentle voice he rarely uses, he spoke. “Calm down, I won’t be leaving you. A man doesn’t like to see a woman cry, you know?”

“And neither do we like seeing you take advantage of this situation, Gintoki.” Takasugi’s cold voice came from behind. “What exactly do you think you’re doing?”

Realizing what you were doing, you quickly pushed Gintoki away, causing him to land on his butt. Wiping any tears that might’ve been left, you turned and glared at Takasugi.

“P-peeping suits you well, midget.” You replied, causing Takasugi to grab you by the collar, bringing his face dangerously close to yours.

“Who do you think you’re calling midget, pipsqueak?” Takasugi’s dark purple eyes bore into your [e/c] ones. “Don’t forget I’m taller than you now.” Seeing your face turn into a dark hue of red, he continued, whispering into your ear huskily. “Or did you provoke me on purpose so I’ll punish you later?”

“You can’t say anything about Gintoki when you’re doing the same Takasugi.” Katsura gently pulled you out of Takasugi’s grip. “Are you alright?”

“Ha, don’t make me laugh, Zura. I have no interest in girls like her. She’s not even a proper woman yet.” Takasugi replied, his stance relaxed.

“Zura janai, Katsura da!” Katsura responded immediately.

You huffed. “So you’re not going to defend me? I’m just a girl and not a woman, huh?”

“Oh!” Katsura shook his head in panic. “No, no! You are a fine woman, [y/n]! The best!”

“Yeah Takasugi.” Gintoki said, rubbing his sore butt. “She’s a fine lady now that she has a nice pair of-”

You threw a knife in Gintoki’s direction, missing his head by an inch. “Don’t you dare finish that sentence.”

“Yes ma’am.” Gintoki sighed and plucked out the knife you threw from the wall. “I’m glad you’re back to normal though.”

“Yeah……” You paused for a moment, considering your next words.

“Tch.” Takasugi clicked his tongue. “If you want to say something, say it. It’s not like you to keep quiet.”

“...... Gintoki, Kotarou, Shinsuke….I” You squeezed your eyes shut and spoke. “I want to go with you guys to get back sensei!”

“.......Ah?” Gintoki scratched his head, as if he were wondering what to say.

“Err….” Even Takasugi was a bit taken back, which was quite a feat, considering how he always managed to come up with a sarcastic reply.

“[y/n], you weren’t planning on coming along?” Katsura asked, looking puzzled. “I for one was pretty sure you were going to come with us in the first place.”

“......................Eh?” You stared at the three of them for a while until Gintoki broke the silence.

“Well I did think she was acting a bit weird, saying things like ‘Don’t go.’ and ‘I need you Gintoki-’” Takasugi kicked Gintoki on the back of his knee effectively shutting him up.

“B-but you didn’t tell me anything-”

“We were planning on telling you tomorrow morning.”

“But Gin said that you two and he were the ones that were going-”

“You didn’t let me finish my sentence. I said I wasn’t going to leave you didn’t I?” Gintoki smiled faintly and mussed up your hair. “Baka, did you think I was lying?”

“We won’t leave some helpless little girl behind. I don’t think someone like you can survive by herself.” Takasugi flicked your forehead and smirked. “After all, you need someone like me to look after you to survive.”

“W-what?! Takasugi, I didn’t know you knew survival skills! Please, take care of me as well.” Katsura looked at Takasugi with amazement. “Oh, but the leader is me, so count on me too, [y/n]. I promise to protect you until the end.” Katsura smiled and brushed a stray tear off your cheek.

Grinning from ear to ear, you let yourself be consumed by their warmth. A few minutes ago, you were afraid they weren’t going to come back and assumed the worst. But after hearing their words and seeing their faces full of confidence, your insecurities melted away. You were definitely coming back to rebuild Shouka Sonjuku with the three of them and sensei.

“Then let’s hurry up and go save Sensei!”

Disclaimer: Gintama and its characters belong to Sorachi-Sensei

Hi! Thanks for reading my first fanfic ever!
I'm a huge fan of Gintama, but there aren't a lot of Gintama fanfics out there so I decided to try writing one!
If there are any mistakes, please let me know. I'll fix them right away.
This is meant to be a series, and I'll be uploading a new chapter every 3 days.
Now a little background about this story.

This story takes place around the time Gintoki, Takasugi, and Katsura go and join the final years of the Joui War.
The prologue is about Gintoki, Takasugi, and Katsura preparing to leave, and you stopping them, telling them to stay.
There are many reasons you don't want them to go, but the main one is that you don't want to lose anyone else anymore.
But someone has to go rescue Shoyou-Sensei.
What will you do when Gintoki refuses to stay back, saying he needs to go no matter what?

If you liked it, please leave a comment or a fave or both!
Watch me so you can be notified everytime I upload a new chapter!
Thank you for reading!
